About Us
Women and children in India have been subjected to abuse, exploitation and violence for thousands of years. India has traditionally been a male dominated society, and from this tradition a society evolved that was centered on men. In the family, community, work, government, all levels of society, men held all power and control, and the rights of women and children were suppressed. To maintain that control the increasing violence against women was tolerated and even accepted as necessary punishment, and the societal structures and traditions both hid, and attempted to normalise this violence, Slowly the influence of this patriarchal mindset became embedded in the culture of the country, and with this India closed its doors on the welfare of women and children.
Even today when India is making significant progress globally in many areas, the treatment of women and children continues to fall below globally accepted standards. According to the Human Development Index released in 2017, India is ranked 131 out of 180 countries, largely due to the poor status of women and children in India. Crimes against women and children occur every minute, and there are still many women and children who fall prey to crimes such as trafficking because they have no access to basic necessities such as food and shelter. Some even lose their lives because of this.
Looking at the continuing plight of women and children in India and at the slow changes taking place at the grass roots level regarding equality for women, Social Action and Research Centre (SARC), was created in 1997. Initially SARC focussed on violence against women, and child sexual abuse, but has since expanded its support into broader areas including women's empowerment and child rights. The aim of SARC is not only provide care and support to overcome trauma, but to educate women and children on their rights and so to create a different society, a different future for women and children in India. With this in mind, SARC provides education to women and men, boys and girls in local schools and communities, and to organisations that deal with violence against women. To change a society peacefully, all members of society must be educated to participate in the change.
SARC's goals to reach the vision of equality and equity amongst all, and specifically to empower women and children are:
- Gender equality is widely accepted and practiced at the ground level
- End violence against women and children
-Empower women and children to shape a healthier society, and,
- Help shape a society where everyone has equal rights and opportunities in the near future.
